Unveiling Iceland's Wonders: Day Trip Around The Golden Circle

Itinerary Overview

Embark on a memorable day trip along Iceland's Golden Circle, a popular route that showcases some of the country’s most stunning natural landscapes and geological wonders. This itinerary covers Þingvellir National Park, Gullfoss waterfall, and the Geysir Geothermal Area, home to Strokkur geyser. A perfect escape into nature from the city if you don’t have a lot of time in the country and want to make the most of it. If you don’t have a car you can book one of the many tour buses that do drive you around to each spot and give you information on the site. I took this trip when I had a 48 hour layover on my way to London.

Morning: Þingvellir National Park

  • Departure: Start your day early to make the most of your trip. Depart from Reykjavik and drive approximately 40 minutes to Þingvellir National Park.

  • Arriving at Þingvellir: Explore the rift valley where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. Stand between the valley to be in between two continents. Enjoy scenic hikes and breathtaking views, particularly around the Silfra fissure.

  • Historic Significance: Take time to learn about Þingvellir's historical importance as the site of Iceland's first parliament, Alþingi, established in 930 AD.

Mid-Morning: Gullfoss Waterfall “Golden Falls”

  • Drive to Gullfoss: After exploring Þingvellir, continue your journey with a 1-hour drive to Gullfoss waterfall.

  • Experiencing Gullfoss: Witness and listen the powerful roars of the water as falls 70 feet into the canyon below. Walk along the designated paths to see the falls from different angles, and feel the mist from the falls.

  • Visitor Center: Stop by the nearby visitor center for coffee, snacks, and information about the falls.

Afternoon: Geysir Geothermal Area

  • Head to Geysir: Depart from Gullfoss and drive about 10 minutes to the Geysir Geothermal Area.

  • Strokkur Geyser: Watch as Strokkur erupts every few minutes, shooting boiling water up to 100 feet into the air. Be ready to capture the picture because it happens quick.

  • Explore the Area: Stroll around the geothermal features, including bubbling mud pots and vibrant mineral deposits.

Late Afternoon: Return to Reykjavik

  • Arrival in Reykjavik: Expect to return to the city by early evening, concluding your packed day trip along the Golden Circle.

This day trip around the Golden Circle will provide you with unforgettable experiences and memories of Iceland's natural beauty. Enjoy the journey!
